Interactive Screen 1.0 Beautiful Lives

Now in its 15th instalment at The Banff Centre, Interactive Screen is the Banff New Media Institute’s flagship new media event. Its category-busting gambit is to mix a world’s worth of media makers, thinkers, and movers around an open theme, and see what happens. This year’s Interactive Screen 1.0: Beautiful Lives looks at the way new media intersects with our aspirations and ambitions, individual or collective, convergent or contradictory, for the betterment of life. This follows directly on the theme of Interactive Screen 0.9: The Makers, which explored the idea of a “society of makers,” redefining the structures of cultural ownership through ground-up creative action.

In addition to the main program, a limited number of scholarship participants from Canada and abroad are chosen for the Interactive Screen Scholarship Intensive. Makers are invited to pitch and develop projects inspired by the event’s theme. Those selected follow, under the guidance of three seasoned advisors, a parallel project development stream woven into the fabric of the event. Applications for the Interactive Screen Scholarship Intensive will be accepted until July 13, 2010.

Integrate anti-racism with emotional intelligence and conflict transformation. Explore the cutting-edge of neuroscience, social psychology and bias research to develop your competency in dealing with conflict that emerges from issues of diversity and creating inclusive, diverse environments. This is a deeply holistic, interactive and experiential program grounded in adult pedagogy that balances intellect with emotions, and internal factors with external forces.
This methodology is successful in nurturing personal growth, learning - and unlearning - through the use of various theoretical lenses without being confined to a singular ideological position. Explore questions like:
What role do emotions play in our interactions with people from different backgrounds?
How do we uncover the “blind-spots” in our unconscious mind to create truly inclusive, welcoming environments?
What is the role of unconscious bias and emotional triggers in handling conflict around issues of difference?
The Institute will greatly assist participants in understanding the critical role of emotions in conflict that involves difference like race and gender. Managers, supervisors, educators, facilitators and diversity representatives from the public, non-profit and private sectors will be equipped with the emotional competency to both navigate through difference and lead effectively.

The full 5 nights is recommended for those responsible for disseminating diversity information and processes to others.

Most of us have talents and qualities that live in isolation from the world, never finding a proper outlet or focus. This can lead to a sense of aimless, endless adaptation, rather than a growing feeling of belonging and generosity. There are ways and means to building this sense of belonging; disciplines that develop real maturity in a human being. It is important to recognize that what we look for is not untrammeled happiness, but an enlarging conversation that can encompass even the most harrowing losses. This conversation is not a Pollyanna search for a hidden key to happiness, but a profound ability to make ourselves large enough, brave enough and generous enough for the triumphs and profound difficulties needed to live even the most ordinary human life.

Join celebrated poet, writer and teacher David Whyte to explore at the cyclical, conversational nature of reality and the disciplines that can create an identity robust enough to meet its gifts and demands.
