Katrina’s Story
In 2001, first year law student Katrina Pacey discovered the Pivot Legal Society—an edgy nonprofit serving Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Working from a founder’s bedroom and borrowed office space, Pivot had embarked on becoming a prominent advocacy group for marginalized people. Katrina devoured the collaborative atmosphere of lawyers and east side citizens around the same table. She found her niche in law reform for sex trade workers.

The legal and regulatory environment within which all not-for-profit organizations operate in Canada can be a complex and confusing - albeit necessary - component of effective organization management. The same regulations which make it possible to provide much needed services and programs on a tax-free basis with access to funding also create their own reporting, registration and governance isses for not-for-profit organizations.
