Bolder Giving seeks to inspire and support individuals to give at their full lifetime potential. We challenge the norms and stereotypes that limit charitable giving by gathering and sharing extraordinary stories of bold givers from across the economic spectrum. We develop tools and advice to help people identify and take actionable steps to transform their giving. Ultimately, we seek to fundamentally shift and expand our collective culture of giving.

Bolder Giving empowers potential bolder givers by helping them:

  • Give More – increase their giving as a percent of income, assets or business profits
  • Risk More – shift how they give by exploring collaborative giving, giving to communities besides their own, giving to
  • social change, expanding their giving to include grassroots and entrepreneurial efforts, and more
  • Inspire More - spark discussions about giving with others and sharing their giving stories as a catalyst for conversation


In June 2010, the Gates Foundation awarded Bolder Giving a three-year matching grant to take our work to scale. We have relocated from Boston to New York City and added new administrative and programmatic staff. We currently seek a dynamic, entrepreneurial and resourceful Director of Communications & Development to help carry out an ambitious growth plan.

Position Overview:

The Director of Communications & Development will lead all fundraising & communications efforts, ensuring we are:

  • Maximizing the opportunity to leverage individual, foundation and partner contributions; and
  • Effectively carrying our message of bold giving to diverse audiences through press outreach, public engagement, conference participation, speaking opportunities, web and social media development and promotion.


Reporting to and working with the Executive Director, the Director of Communications & Development will develop and execute a fundraising and communications strategy designed to support the organization’s future goals. He/she will skillfully represent the organization to donors, prospects, media leaders, and the public, and will continually seek out new communication and funding opportunities to enable Bolder Giving to expand its impact. This position is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious development and communications professional to help take Bolder Giving to a new level organizationally and, in the process, make a significant contribution to lasting social change.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Fundraising

  1. In consultation with the Executive Director, develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive, strategic fundraising plan with specific, measurable goals
  2. Initiate, cultivate, manage, and steward relationships with the organization’s portfolio of individual, foundation and corporate supporters; support the ED in doing the same
  3. Identify, research and investigate new opportunities for funding from a wide variety of philanthropic and individual sources to expand Bolder Giving’s donor base
  4. Coordinate staff, consultant and volunteer team to carry out all Bolder Giving fundraising activities - including grant proposals and reports, major donor cultivation and communications, and fundraising events
  5. Build and refine operational and technological infrastructure to maximize fundraising, with a particular focus on leveraging Salesforce for pipeline management and donor cultivation

Communication

  1. Lead with the Executive Director, board, and consultants the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy that includes press outreach, web development, social media, publications and public engagement.
  2. Coordinate a staff, consultant and volunteer team in developing and editing new communications content including new Bold Giver profiles, new website (to role out in Jan 2011), giving tools, social media updates (primarily Facebook & Twitter), monthly e-bulletins, and other materials;
  3. Coordinate and support an earned media strategy in partnership with the ED and Bolder Giving’s PR firm
  4. Manage dissemination of Bolder Giving profiles to other websites through distribution partnerships and assist in
  5. identification of new partners
Desired Qualifications:

We realize that some candidates may present more significant experience in either a communications or development role. While our ideal candidate would demonstrate considerable experience and skill in both areas, we will consider candidates with compelling experience & skills that are greater in one area than the other.

General Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success building and leading development and communication functions in fast-paced, growing, entrepreneurial nonprofit organization(s)
  • Organizational management skills including team building and staff/consultant/volunteer supervision and motivation
  • Strong understanding of and connection to the philanthropic community
  • Comfort talking with others about complex issues of wealth, values, and giving
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills, with the ability to engage a range of audiences
  • A sense of humor and the humility to incorporate feedback from others into work processes
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred


Desired Development Qualifications:

  • Experience designing and implementing fundraising and communication plans for a variety of funding streams including major gifts, foundation giving, and an annual small-gift campaign.
  • Success in networking to build creative and mutually beneficial partnerships within the nonprofit, public and corporate sectors
  • Experience in preparing effective grant proposals and individual appeals
  • Track record of successfully meeting fundraising goals of $500,000 - $1 million or more and experience in significantly growing revenues over time


Desired Communication Qualifications:

  • Extraordinary writing, editing, listening, and speaking skills, with proven ability to absorb complex issues and translate information to broad audiences
  • Working knowledge of mainstream and philanthropic media and experience in successfully pitching stories and managing media relationships
  • Evidence of success in proactive as well as reactive communications situations
  • Able to utilize state-of-the-art communications technology creatively and effectively
